Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. set up a camp in our colony yesterday, 12th Oct. 2016, to "Convert Aadhaar Cards to Smart Card", for all residents, irrespective of whether they are the banks customers or not.
They did not have any authorisation document from UIADI.
The "Smart Card" was in reality only a plastic card, without any Chip or encrypted memory embedded in it.
- The "Conversion Process" followed by the bank executives was as follows:
a) Scan the original Aadhar card in Color.
b) Take away the scanned images on their computer.
c) Deliver the plastic "Card" a few days later, with the scanned Aadhar card images printed on it
The bank executives openly admitted to collecting the residents data for various "unspecified purposes".
A UIADI press release dated 11 April 2016, by Director General Dr. A.B.Pandey, clearly states "There is no such thing as Aadhar smart card. Collection of Aadhar card data from individuals under the pretext of printingsmart card is illegal".
The bank was openly in defiance of this.
Please keep this in mind when asked by any organisation to share your Aadhar card data for conversion to so-called "smart card".
Please see attached photograph.
My concerns are:
Is there any mechanism for preventing banks(and other private organisations) from using the collected data for fraudulent and nefarious purposes?
