Good ambience but not so good food

Malgudi true to its name has a fantastic ambience (like inside the house of a typically south Indian village) and the waiters dressed in panche kacche and is quite spacious and well lighted. The restaurant is open till about 11 in the night, which sometimes is good, particularly useful if you returning back after a long drive. The restuarant is located slightly ahead of Marathahalli bridge en-route to K.R.Puram on Outer Ring Road.

Now, as far as the food is concerned, the menu consists of purely south Indian food. It comprises of classical dishes from each of the four south indian states. Drinks are served and non-vegeterian food is also available. Me, being a veggie, I would be able to comment on the varieties in the veg food. Specialities from Karnataka include, neer dosa, jowar roti, akki roti, raagi mudde; idiyappam, appam, avial from Tamilnadu; Uletheli, traditional puttu, malabar parotta and finally vankai koora and other specialities from Andhra. Right from the moment we started browsing the menu, taste buds got eager to dive into the feast of flavours.

The order was taken quite late and have to wait for long until a person came to take the order  but the time to prepare and serve was very reasonable and the dishes arrived within 10 minutes of ordering. But the biggest disappointment was that the granduer menu did not match up to the taste of the actual dishes served. Obviously, the expectations were high but still the taste was average at best. Final shock was pending until the bill arrived. For 2 startes, 2 side dish curries and 3 sets of roti and parotta combination, the bill was a whopping Rs.850. Mind you that there were no deserts, no drinks, and no non-veg items. Not that the price by itself was teep, but for the food served and quality of service, the price was certainly very steep.

Yet, I would recommend this restaurant either when you are really bored of all other nearby restaurants or when you have craving for south indian food. I would be taking a guess, going by the number of visitors I have seen twice or thrice that I have been there,  that non-veg items are good and also that drinks are served at your table, makes it a big plus for people who are fond of them.
