Tips for M800 - Unleash the beast within !!

Hello all maruti lovers,

All would like to share my experiments with maruti 800 (Year 1990 , Type 1).

Yah, I know its quiet old to do some mind blowing expensive modifications. But here are the few tips to make your older or oldest maruti more smoother and more responsive than ever.

Also all these things are in a easy budget of around max 3000/-

These experiments I carried out are with the experienced mechanic. (I am an IT person but I am crazy for cars!!)

1> Clean the gearbox with Petrol or kerosene.

What to do is first drain old gear-oil .Don’t drain it up to last drop. Stop draining when the continus flow stops and oil starts dropping drop by drop. (In short keep little amout of oil inside the box.)

Fill kerosene as per marking on the pin (Where we check the gearoil level). Close all oil inlet and outlet properly. Start the engine keep it running at medium accelerator and put it in first gear then second then third then fourth and then reverse (Dont attempt to drive as changing gears without oil is very very difficult. Gear lever seems like it is locked and it becomes extremely hard to change gears).

Do not worry about this situation as kerosene can not act as oil so all engine operation becomes extremely rough and noisy. After couple of minutes drain all the kerosene till last drop and put new gearoil in it (Up to marking on the level pin). Repeat the gear changing process as described above.

While changing the gears suddenly one point comes where your gear lever becomes very silky and smooth and thats the sign of perfect oil change. Now you can clearly feel the difference in changing the gears. Advantage of this process is it cleans all the gears which ultimately reduces the oil temperature which is caused by unnecessary friction of dirty (very small metal particles cause more friction and max wear and tare) gears.Do not keep kerosene for more than 15-20 minutes as it may damage oil seals permanently. Also do not try this experiment with engine oil as it may damage your piston ring and chanber permanently. (Try Castrol Magnetic around 600-700/- 3L can.)

2> Adjust the sparkplug gap properly

Adjust the sparkplug gap in such a way that it should give white-blue spark(more white and less blue).

3> Now comes the critical part timing adjustment / tunning.

Adjusting the timing of sparkplugs (Timing advance and all !). For this what you need to do is accelerate the engine upto 1500 RPM (Approximately). At this RPM adjust the first sparkplug timing (Match with the light gun (Mechenic knonws how to match you just have to force them to match it at 1500 RPM ....in general they adjust it at idling RPM of 700-900)). Now after adjusting it at 1500 raise RPM to 3500 and check the timing advance it should clearly show the timing advance. If not you may have to replace/repair distributor mechenism. Now open the distributor. notice the two metal pin assembly which generates the spark (which is distributed lateron). Take the smoothest sand paper available (I think they call it ’0’ number paper). Polish the contacts neatly. (I clean this contacts every 500 km).It helps a lot and gives little better pickup and faster speed.

4> Carburator tunning.

Check the secondary valve operation at 3500-4000 rpm. Valve should open and close properly. This valve is in the carburator. Remove the airfilter assembly completely and you can see the valve opening and closing. If valve is held by hand and not let open, engine sound changes from sharper zoooom to dull broooom. So notice the engine sound is it zooom or broooom. Clean the entire carburator if valve is not operating properly. Now the tunning part. adjust the fuel supply to the max (Screw behind the carburator). Keep engine running at 1500 RPM. Monitor the silencer emissions. Start closing the screw by one turn at a time.A point will come where you will get the max moisture out of the silencer. If the silencer is quiet cold water will start dropping and if engine raised it sprinkles water(Sprinkling water is the sign of the best tunning). This gives the better performance.

5> Change the PCV valve (suppose to change after every 20, 000km)

This valve is responcible for keeping the oil pressure leven in control. If this valve is not operating properly oil pressure increases which results in pumping extra oil for pistons and low milage.

Now take the car for ride. Notice one thing here, as engine is specially tunned for 1500 RPM you may find it little difficult to drive at lower RPM as it dosent give smooth running.

Its like leave the accelerator and car will start jerking like as if you are driving on higher gear with slower speed. Dont worry about this just press a accelerator littlebit more and zoooom.

you will find the amazing pickup with the quiet sporty feel.

I myself did all these things at home.

I have driven this car with 5 adult persons + 60 kg extra baggage with windows closed at speed of 110km/hr. On smooth highways give max accelerator on third gear and u can easily touch 60 in few seconds. I was really amazed when I overtake other cars while I was climbing uphill !!! Also when you are crusing @ 50-60 you may not hear any engine sound at all !!

Also you can try out other performance options like Indian Oil extramile friction bustor petrol or System -G fuel additives available at BP petrol pumps.

Just try out and revert back ............waiting for valuable comments and feedbacks.

Note : - Ceneior Mech. / Engineers please advice on the same
