N for no quota

Well The Hrd Ministry’s decision to extend quota in the central universities to the obc’s and thereby extending the reservation cap to 49.5% has come as a rude shock to the student community of this nation.

This just proves the Government’s inability over the years to lift the backward classes, since Independence quotas have existed but that has solved little purpose apart from creating a ’creamy layer’ among the backward castes, it is this ’creamy layer’ that takes advantage of all quotas and other such benefits although they may not be economically backward thus the very reason for which quotas had been created - social justice has been destroyed.

The interesting thing about this latest move is that some sections of the dalit intelligentsia is not happy with this the reason being they feel that obc’s need no reservations as the dalits do because they already are powerful.

Some of the so called backward castes

Yadavs- Rule in Uttar pradesh and Bihar.

Jats- Rule in Haryana but ’Backward’ in Rajasthan.

Lingayats and Vokkaligas- Nearly half of karnataka’s assembly consists of them.

This review is not to promote any kind of casteism but to show that the Government’s decision is more to do with Vote bank politics than provide ’social justice’.

If social justice is the ultimate agenda than what should be done is that all reservations should go to EBC’s(Economically backward class) irrespective of whatever caste a person belongs to if he is economically backward he should get preference.

By this ideology too students like us will get affected but then atleast the reservations will go to people who actually deserve it.
