When was the last time you came out of a theater ’’HAPPY’’??? I dont remember. No I am not saying I havnt seen a good movie in ages. But I think 90% of the good films are about depressing themes..take SHOOL, CHANDNI BAR etc etc. DIL CHAHTA HAI was neat but it lost its way in the 2nd half ’’love story’’. I was happy after watching SATYA . Satya wasnt quite a happy movie but the movie impressed me so much I was shocked that there can be a Indian film that good.
Monsoon Wedding is just that kind of movie which puts a smile on everyones face while leaving the theater. Its a ’’total masti movie’’ DILLI ISHTYLE. Mira Nair said she made a fun movie & she is BANG ON. The script, the acting, the music everything was so perfect. The cinematography using a digital camera (with lotsa close up shots) gave the whole movie a very personal touch. It makes the audience feel like they are also a part of the wedding.
The Acting is superb by everyone. Naseer as usual shows whos the BOSS as far as acting is concerned. Lilletue Dubey matching upto the GOD of Acting in every scene. Shefali Chaya as usual becomes the character she potrays on screen. Kulbhushan Kharbanda as the fun loving Tauji. His NRI kid was cool too. And the babe he falls for is HOT!!!! Their is the typical SHAADI MEIN ROMANCE. Rajat Kapoor was good too in the role of the eldest of the Khandaan. My only problem is Vasundhara Das. I dunno its just me or what. She kinda looks wooden at times to me. Maybe it happened ’coz she had to share the screen with the likes of NAseer & Shefali Chaya all the time. But somehow she just didnt feel like a punjabi gal to me. Now the HERO of the film- DUBEY(P.K.Dubey) . He stole the show from all the pros. He is ur regular contractor. Speaks the pucca dilli hindi lingo. And woos the maid ALice in the film. Throughout the film the whole theatre was rooting for him. In the 2nd half everytime he came on screen the junta was clapping & whistling.
The script was neat. But the Censor board as usual has taken it to the cleaners. Words like Bhenchod Chutiya has been cut all over. And the best part is the movie starts with a scene where there is a TALK SHOW happening where the topic is CENSORSHIP. NEAT!!!
This year has probably been the best year for Indian films as far as I am concerned. I usually find 1 or 2 movies per year to make a trip to the theater. This year in last few months esp since LAGAAN I have seen 6 hindi movie in the theatres-DIL CHAHTA HAI, CHANDI BAR, LAGAAN, Bollywood CALlinG, Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi KArega. And all these movies have been great. IN last 3 years I had seen totally 7 Indian films in theaters(and out of that one was BOMBAY BOYS & another was Hyd Blues)
Watch this film. I bet you’ll have a ball.
By the way I watched the Hindi version which is dubbed. My friend said the Hindi version might feel more authentic so we changed our plans at the last moment. The dubbing at times doesnt look real. Though the dialogues certainly are excellent. I am gonna watch the English version soon. I think Mira Nair should release a version where they all speak in whatever languages they would naturally speak. But in the end it was great. I had a great time watching a film in a theater today. NOW THATS RARE!!!!!!
