MS-Dos... friend or foe?

ABORT (A), RETRY (R), IGNORE (I)?

KEYBOARD NOT FOUND! PRESS F1 TO CONTINUE.

Fubar NOT RECOGNIZED AS AN INTERNAL COMMAND OR FILENAME.

Just a few examples of what many people think of when they think of MS-Dos. Cryptic, useless errors that nobody seems to be able to understand. Hard-to-remember commands just for browsing through your harddisk, having to remove all files from a folder (or directory, in slang) before you can remove the folder...

When I think of MS-Dos however, I think of a trusty friend that I can use even when everything else fails. Got a screwed FAT? DOS will still boot... Lost your Win98 CD? Does will still boot from floppy.

I think that DOS is something everyone that’s even a little bit technical about computers should know about, since it will be helpful. Trust me. An example: I’m a 16 year old student at a highschool. I find myself using DOS programs quite often, simply because there’s no windows version of the program I need. When my fellow students panic at the evil blinking ’’low line’’ (AKA the prompt) it’s always me who has to help them out :(

Anyway, DOS is obsolete, I admit. GUI’s are easier to use and they simplify most tasks. But we still need DOS...
