I stay in the Dadar(West) area of Mumbai.
Till last year, I used to have Reliance Connect service through mobile to get connected to the internet. It was painfully slow, besides I had to ensure I was in the vicinity of the cellular tower to get proper data signals. To top it up, it was expensive at Rs.650 / month with a 1 GB limit. The connection faltered quite a few times. All in all, definitely something that’d make u go grrr!
Decided to go in for a MTNL connection.
Getting a Connection:-
Had to wait for 3 months to get the connection. But it was done well. The MTNL engineers came and installed everything perfectly. The connection started instantaneously and worked well with a wireless modem.
Plan Taken:-Originally, we opted for the Rs.849 plan which offered 1.25 GB limit during the day time and unlimited net during the night with a speed up to 2 MB/sec. This was quite good until my internet usage crossed limits and soon I found my phone bills shooting and once crossed Rs.5000 in a month after umpteen video streaming and movie downloads:PThankfully by then, MTNL had introduced unlimited data plans. Currently using the’Up to 512 KB/Sec’ plan at Rs.999/month. Quite an expensive proposition, but value for money.
Speed Offered:-MTNL impresses me. Great speeds. I get 180 - 250 KB/Sec during the day and even 500 - 600 KB/Sec in the night. At times, the starting speed is upto 3 MB/Sec. I have experienced the pleasure of having downloaded a 10 MB song in 3 seconds flat! Yes, recently, the speeds have gone down but the CC has been very helpful in getting it up again. I’ll come to it later in the CC Experience segment.
Overall Experience:-Fantastic. Absolute value for money. There have been stray incidents of disconnections, non connectivity to the internet and so and so forth but very very rare! No complaints.
CC Experience segment:-Contrary to what people would think, MTNL has one of the best Technical support teams in Mumbai despite being a government organisation. A couple of days back, I raised a complaint online about dismal speed I was getting. This was in the afternoon. By evening, a lady called in from MTNL to check if the speed was fine and if we had an engineer come over. The speed got better by late evening and by night was working absolutely fine. Even more unbelievable was the fact that the next day, I got three calls at different times of the day from MTNL to check if my internet was working properly. That surely was amazing - a feat unparalleled even by the supposedly more efficient private ISPs. Call 1504 from your MTNL landline to get connected to their Broadband helpline.
Overall Verdict:-
Go for it. It has to be the best in South Mumbai atleast!
