Kenya would be truly a great place if it improves on few aspects like security and public transport. The govt. of Kenya is working on them and the situation is a lot better (for security) as compared to a few years back. Otherwise, Kenya is a great place! Has a variety of terrain, natural features and climate.
I have stayed in Nairobi for more than a year now. And I know about Nairobi a bit.
Nairobi, the capital city is truly an international city, except some areas (suburbs) which are dirty. It has amixture of tall buildings and small buildings.
The city being around 5500 feet above sea-level has a nice, pleasent weather through out the year. Heavy Rains are generally during April-June and short rains prevail in the later parts of the year. Pollution levels in the city are truly much lower than in big cities like Mumbai, Delhi in India. This city is fully loaded with lots of green trees. City is a must visit. Its a great city. Transport is good as long as you have your own vehicle. Only locals (Africans) can travel in the so called public transport (Matatus). So, outsider got to have his own vehicle. Roads are good otherwise.
But traffic is heavy during peak hours. The city lacks traffic signals in most areas.
The city has numerous restaurants from Indian, Chinese, Continental, African and Multi-Cuisines. Hotels are also good. Some of the big hotels are Holiday Inn, Serena Group of hotels, Sarova. Nairobi Gymkhana should be good enough for middle class people.
Let me warn you, the city is expensive (especially if you are used to Indias system). Taxis will be costly. Hotels and restaurants will be costly too. But once you stay here you will get used to it. Comparitively a cheap Restaurant (Vegetarian only), Ashiana in westlands, provides good Indian Veg. food. You can get a thali (full meals) for around Ksh. 400/-. Other eateries will be costlier. A good veg. course will cost Ksh 1000/- per person atleast.
The city has quite a few attractions. It has a museum, Uhuru park, Nairobi National Park etc. The KICC (Kenyatta International Conference Centre) is a tall, black building and you can get a great view of the city from top of this building.
The city has a number of malls and shopping arcades in various parts of the city. It has two main supermarket chain around the city, in which you can get A-Z things. The biggest and better one is the Nakumatt chain.
Nairobi has a number of clubs where people spend their week-ends/holidays. Nairobi Gymkhana is the best out of them. Gymkhana has a cricket ground, badminton court, tt, swimming etc. Gymkhana has boarding and lodging facility as well.
This city is the heart of Kenya. Most of the international flights land here in Jomo Kenyatta International airport. Nairobi connects to other Kenyan cities like Mombasa, Kisumu and Eldoret by domestic air. Also it connects to various international destinations by air. It can be a perfect stop over place. Also Nairobi connects to smaller cities in Kenya, villages and wild life parks by road.
Come visit Nairobi, Kenya to experience the city.
