Dont get me wrong. I liked the actual phone, features, functionality, blah blah...
I was a hard core Nokia fan till I got this phone. It seems theyve got so much confidence in their products that theyve stopped testing their phones before releasing them on an unsuspecting world.
I got my 6600 in Dec 03. The features were just what I wanted. It was based on the new version of Symbian (7.0s), had a camera, could store all the messages I wanted to keep and I could back up the stuff to my comp rather than delete them at a later point of time.
I used the phone for everything. It was used as a PDA (reasonable enough for me), gaming device (I even had Doom installed on it), dictionary, remote control for my computer (BlueTooth + winamp + Bemused = step into the house, press play on the phone and get rocked by music from the computer - choose from the 3000+ songs on your machine).
It stored ALL call details for whatever calls/messages were made or received and had filtering options. Features wise, the best phone Ive owned yet.
Okay... it wasnt all rosy... heres the downside. Nokia must have been behind on their schedule when they released the phone, so the thing is BUG RIDDLED
I was in Brunei when I got the phone (time zone +8), so didnt face this problem initially, but India has a time zone of +5.5. This phone seems to have problems handling the half hour part, so any calls in the call register would have ignored that... result = if I made a call at 4pm, itd get logged as 3:30. Its not like this for all calls/messages though, so you go mad trying to figure out if you called at 4 or 3:30...
not so much of an issue, but quite irritating when you need to see the time of call...
Then theres a Birthday field in the contacts info. Try adding this detail. Its a bit confusing at first, because the screen just goes back to the contact info - no input boxes/cursor or anything. Type and you see the digits appear for the date. This incidentally doesnt automatically synchronise with the calendar, so entering a birthday here wont allow you to set a reminder or anything like that.
Restarts just happen by themselves. You might even be on the phone at the time and itll just restart. Seems to be quite random. Other people Ive told about this didnt really take me seriously when I told them, but give it 3 or 4 months of use THEN tell me it doesnt happen.
Saved the worst bug for last.
Id set a security code on the phone and set the phone so that it asks for the pin code on startup. What youre supposed to observe with such settings is:
if the phone is off and someone switches it on with the same SIM, itll ask for the pin - protects your connection from misuse.
if someone changes the SIM, itll ask for the security code - protects the phone from theft.
The first case works just fine, but in the second case, what actually happens is this:
Phone has been working with SIM A
SIM A is removed and SIM B (a previously unused card) is inserted.
Phone is switched on and works without requesting a code.
SIM B is removed and SIM A is inserted.
Phone is switched on and requests the user to enter the security code.
result - if your phone is stolen, all someone has to do is put in a new card and ensure that its not removed at all for the phone to be used.
Needless to say, I dropped my phone one day and it got picked up by some lucky guy who put in a new SIM.
End of review.
