Just an hours journey from Chennai or Kolkata, and you are far away from the maddening crowd, into a replica of The Garden of Eden! the wonder that is Andamans!
The first thing you notice on your way from Airport to hotel is the freshness in the damp air, the tranquility in the atmosphere around you. If you are a tourist who want shopping malls, night life, hangouts, Pizza corners etc., Andamans is not the place for you. It is for those who want to rediscover the nature, mingle with it and rejoice the newfound alone-ness.
The first thing any Indian must see there is of course, the cellular jail. I could hardly stop tears rolling down my cheeks, when I attended the sound and light show in the jail, listening to the the cries of freedom fighters being tortured. It is a wonderful experience. The second thing you should visit is the Jolly Buoy island or the Red Skin island (depending on what time you visit the Andamans), and do some underwater exploration of the rich marine life in the corals with the help of snorkels. It is an experience that youll cherish for a life time!
Thirdly, dont miss a visit to the Havelock Island, and enjoy the serenity of a pristine forest, white sands and cristal clear turquoise blue waters.Tent houses are available on hire, if you are little adventurous and like to spend a night by the sea!
The government owned hotels, The Andaman Teal House or the Megapode Nest are cheap and very comfortable, the staff are very friendly, and all the tourist guides in Port Blair offer excellent services at very reasonable rates, which is incomparable with any other place in the main land India. The whole tour (including Air Fare) would cost lesser than that for a weeks holiday in Goa or Simla. No honeymooner should miss this destination.
