HUL water purifier: Awards for Worst Design and

We shifted from a simple manual-fill water purifier of Usha Brita brand to a wall-mounted box by Hindustan Unilever called "PureIt". And have regretted the decision ever since.

  1. The filters need to be changed every four months. Cost Rs. 700 every time.

  2. The BPO service that one has to contact for any support including for ordering the filters has a standard answer "we’ll send someone in three days". Last time we got a new set of filters, the water would not flow in. When we called the "service" number, we got the same answer of someone coming in in three days. Drinking water not flowing in, problem will be rectified in three days! They really hope customers will stay alive without drinking water for three days!

  3. The service center has  morons with minimal standard BPO training manning it. They can’t handle a simple call asking for an urgent repair of the no-flow problem. They give the same answer.

  4. The design is so complicated that, to replace the filter cartridges, the entire machine has to be taken down and disassembled totally! Once every four months!

  5. There is a plastic jar designed to fill water. There are weird projections on the platform where the jar  is kept. The jar has a projection that has to be pushed into a receiving projection with three holes, so water can flow through the holes. If the jar is not pushed perfectly, the water won’t flow in well!

  6. There is a complicated attachment  where the device pipe connects with the water-line pipe. It got choked inside once, and there was no easy way of cleaning it.

  7. In summary, the design is so weird and complicated to handle. For a simple machine like a water purifier, they’ve successfully made it into a convoluted complicated design!

  8. Barely one year into using(!) this machine, we are seriously considering reverting to good old manual Usha Brita machine.

Heed all ye, who are looking to buy a simple water purifier, don’t fall for the great name of Hindustan Unilever.
