BURNING OF RAVAN - STUPIDITY PERSONIFIED

Ramayan is a pretty good serial from which we can learn many things. Those who don’t know its story. There are two brothers Ram and Laxman. Sita is Ram’s devoted wife. Ravan is also in love with Sita so he kidnaps her. Ram along with Laxman and Hanuman, get Sita back after destroying the courtship of Ravan.

But what I dont like about Ramayan is the trend that it has started of celebrating Dushera where Ravan is burnt year after year. Since this year also Dushera is nearing so I thought of writing this review.

The trend of celebrating ’Dushera’ by burning the dummy of Ravan has been going on for years now. With each passing year, this disgusting festival is celebrated with more zeal and passion!

This festival is described as a victory of good over bad; a victory of light over darkness; a victory of truth over lies; blab-blab-blab-blab-blab.............

But I feel this festival is a victory of stupidity over intelligence, a victory of fools over geniuses and a victory of stereo traditions over logical reasoning!

I believe Ravan has got more than his share of punishment and this amateur ugly tradition of burning him year after year should be stopped immediately! After all, he wasn’t that bad a person!

He worshiped gods day in and day out, and made many sacrifices to make them happy. God also saluted his devotion by gifting him 10 heads - A remarkable achievement, nobody else in Hindu mythology has been able to attain!

His soul also wasn’t that bad. He kidnapped Sita - agreed! But his love and respect for her can be seen in the fact that he didn’t even touch her once in Lanka! Ravan is treated as God in Lanka and they worship him. How will we Indians feel if Sri Lankans start burning the dummy of Lord Rama every year?

Everyone has some bad qualities, but no sin is so huge that it can’t be forgiven!

As far as I’m concerned, a bigger sinner than Ravan was Lord Rama, who doubted the character of his holy wife Sita and put her to fire test!

Hence, Ravan has completed his quota of punishment and should be left alone!
