‘SARKAR’ was probably bollywoods most awaited movie of the year. It was set to be the Adaptation of the book ‘ The Godfather’ and it had real time father and son turning in to reel time father and son for the first time. There were great expectations surmounting as people eagerly waited to see Bachchan Sr and Jr on the silver screen together. With the movie getting released all over India it has quite well satisfied the expectations created.
I have neither read ‘ The godfather’ nor watched the movie so will not be comparing it with our desi version.
The storyline of the movie is very simple. Its all about Subash Nagare played by our Big B who is know as the Sarkar to the public. He runs a parallel government of his own to help the needy and sort out their problems. He has his own way of doing it, and considers nothing right or wrong only power withstands. He does nothing which is gonna affect the poor masses. His elder son played by the highly talented Kay Kay is a rebellion to his own father. He doesn’t like to stay under the shadows of his power full father always. So he along with a few other people decides for the down fall and killing of Sarkar. Abhishek Bachchan who plays Big B’s younger, stands by his father’s side and gives his support to him. He loses his girl friend played by Katrina, who feels his father is a Criminal and a gunda. The movie ends with the bad men failing to conquer the power of Sarkar, and the younger Bachchan taking over the responsibilities for his father.
The movie has Ramgopal Varma’s stamp in each and every frame. He has indeed done a commendable job. The screen play though patchy at a few instances is very well handled by Varma. He has made sure that all the actors do justice to their roles. He has made Amitabh to underplay his character and brought the best out of him. Kudos to Varma. There are a couple of scenes which are indeed a great piece of work, the scene where Bachchan junior goes on a rampage during the last half on hour, the scene where he walk slowly towards his father after killing his brother, the dining room scene where KayKay confronts his father are a few of them worth special mentioning.
Then when we speak of the performances everyone have done full justice to their characters. Amitabh just ignites the screen with his sheer screen presence. In a movie which requires less speaking and more actions and expressions he has beautifully underplayed and has proves his prowess again. Junior Bachchan matches his father scene to scene. As each movie goes by he had becoming more and more matured. He looks incredibly stylish in the last half an hour of the movie. The other note worthy performance comes from Kay Kay. He is a very talented actor and hope to see him soon in many good performances. The others Supriya Pathak, tanisha, Katrina Kaif all prove their worth in the couple of scenes they get. The villains have also done their roles to perfection.
Special credits should be give to the Music Director of the movie. Amar Mohile has done a commendable job as the music director. His back ground score gives the right tempo for the movie. Not to forget the ‘govinda govinda’ theme that keeps haunting us throughout the movie. The Camera work proves to apt match for the direction and Back ground score. The close up shots were taken with utmost perfection. The lighting effects were brilliant. It kept changing according with the mood of the movie.
This movie is one of Varmas finest product coming closely behind ‘Company’ and ‘Sathya’. This movie is indeed a treat to all Varma Fans. Some may feel the movie a bit lagging in pace and patchy at times, but it is sure a 100 times better the usual bollywood masala flicks. Watch the movie for Varma and the Two Bachchans.
