This summer, I was in Bangalore for a mini holiday. I decided to make the most of it and decided to take in a package tour of three of the most widely recomended tourist spots. I am talking about the Belur-Halebid-Shravanbelagola circuit. And so there I was, waiting outside the KSTDC office waiting for the arrival of our bus, whichd take us there. On the dot, at 07.30am, our bus arrived, and all of departed for the above-mentioned places.
The first place on our itinary was Shravanbelagola. This is a small town, which is famous for its temple dedicated to Bahubali. It is an important Jain The road to this place was quite nice, and we were grateful for that, considering the fact that I was seated on the rear tyre section. Earlier I had feared that in all probability id be flying to the tourist spots.
Situated on a hillock (indragiri hills)is the famous tourist attraction...the statue of Bahubali, the largest in the world, carved out of one stone, and hence called a monolith. It is 27 mts high.
Thousands of devotees congregate here to perform the Mahamastakabhisheka a spectacular ceremony held once in 12 years, when the 1000-year -old statue is anointed with milk, curds, ghee, saffron, and gold coins. The next one will be held in the year 2005.
To get to the top, you have to negotiate around 600 steps. And it is not difficult to navigate. For those who are unable to climb, there are the palkis which can take you to the top.The view of the statue is truly breathtaking. Also, the view of the town from the top is nice. A nice place to visit...
