Pump up the power!

Hi friends!

This is Anand signing in again. Not a biking review this time :)

Check out my profile and you’ll know why I am writing this one!

I bought this monster Sony MHC-RV-22 in 2004 Diwali. If you check my Pulsar review, this monster was one of the reasons which screwed up the budget for my bike..

For those who are curious for the picture, please refer: https://geocities.com/quakeanandrenake/rv22.jpg

Desktop speakers :p, portables, walkman, phones etc do not in any way make a music enthu happy(damn you call it a music player?). So, obviously I wanted a high powered music system which would play mp3s as well. I fixed ma eyes on this Sony player. I am not a Sony lover and do not believe in ’’Its a Sony’’ stuff.. Sadly today only Sony (among the reputed) is widely available in India and my friend works in Sony, so I had an obvious advantage ;)

Heres what I looked for:

  • Mp3 playback

  • No DVD playback -> Cost cutting, and dvd players come with 5.1 sound which was undesirable.

  • High power output

  • Minimum 3 speakers per channel -> more the better

  • Good looks -> This one looks awesome, check the woofers..

  • Manual control over the frequency spectrum/Equalisers

  • Surround mode(s)

  • VCD playback optional.

  • Reliability

In brief, I needed an awesome music player for me, which can punch the bricks outta the walls of my house. A music player is strictly 2 channel(stereo) system so my choice was narrowed down on the RV22 (and its cheap too :D )

Here are some specs/features:

  • ACD/VCD/mp3 cd, cdr, cdrw playback

  • 120+120W rms power -> 2600W pmpo (I call it pampo ;) )

  • FM/AM tuner -> I never used it

  • Hybrid dual woofer -> Rocks my world :D Two woofers (in one channel) you see in the picture give you different bass notes.

  • Mono super tweeter per channel -> Gives you that clear treble notes and hizzes, chinks and the clinks.

  • 3 band manual equaliser -> 3 program memory, heavily used feature.

  • 1 surround mode -> Gives you a real LIVE effect!! Always on

  • 8 preset equaliser modes -> Never used :D except Movie EQ

  • VACS -> Stands for Variable attenuation control system. This is a common feature in all Sony hifi’s. The function of this circuitry is to control the sound amplitude levels and keep them at the maximum threshold (after which audible distortion/cracking starts)

To tell you in short, VACS does not let the music crack even at full volume. You have to experience this to believe it :d

Everytime I turn the volume to the full, all I get is raw music power thumping at my heart, the floor seems to shake and all the cupboard doors begin to vibe!! The woofers pump in and out as if they are alive. ’’I need to come out of the grill(jail)’’. The woofers mesmerize you when you look at it!(A real music lover will know what I am talking about...) All without an inch of sound cracking. Don’t be surprised if your feet starts moving and you become ’’mast’’ and start dancing, lol!

  • 3 CD tray -> For movie playback/ non stop music.

  • 2 deck cassette player -> Only my papa plays his antique songs :D

  • Karaoke, game input, illuminator etc etc -> Never used

  • A remote commander/controller -> A must!! :)

  • 2 Groove modes -> This too is a common feature in the Sonys. Groove basically amplifies the sound(mostly bass) levels. There are 3 gain modes; off, groove, vgroove. I never felt the necessity to switch to vgroove.

The features are enough for high end music lovers and 2600watts translate into mind blowing audio o/p just at the turn of the volume dial.

Pros: unbeatable sound quality, incredible woofers ready to dance with you on any music number, features++++

Cons: You need to use this system or the lens seeker gets jammed. I serviced it myself.

In all, a wonderful system to have in your room. Anytime you wanna impress the gal next door, just turn on your music system and invite her for a dance party ;)

Anand signing out!
