Good service, needs install & technical support

I got it mainly because I was completely disappointed with BSNL’s techical support and service. The third party contractors that Tata Indicom had hired came and installed the WiMax antenna. Actually it is a very simple and hazzle free technology comared to our wired solutions. But the guys came to install the antenna and the back end guys at base stations were NOT that well synchronized. I could see lot of frustration with the installation guys. It was all set and I could surf net. I DID NOT like that I have to login every time I want to connect with a user name and password. But it worked. Speed was just ok, definitely not 256K that I ordered for.

Fine the very next day it stopped working. And I launched a complaint. They got back to me and made me to reset the antenna(modem) with factory defaults. And they made me create all the basestations. and it all took 45 minutes. But it did not work. Next couple of days I waited. They sent a engineer who came and checked and reported that the antenna was not installed in a tall enough place to receive signals that well. He reported that back to Tata Indicom. But know what no one turned up to fix that.

I cant give up so I kept calling the technical support. And all of a sudden they fixed it and I could surf again. But again every time it goes down I have to reset the modem to factory defaults and manually create the base stations. I did not use it almost for a month. Then I got real mad and called them again. this time the support engineer asked me every little bit of details to root cause the problem. And know what? She told me that I am supposed to keep the Antenna power ON all the time for a NO DOWNTIME and up time. I asked how would I know that? where is it told? She said it is not mentioned anywhere but that is how it works.

And then I kept the POE(Power On Ethernet?) White box that takes both ethernet and power to the WiMax Antenna powered ON all the time. And the internet always worked. The bandwidths also improved and was ok. I never had NO problems at all after that.

It is a very good service. But they need to fix the POOR back end support and installation precesion. Well that could be a Indian Culture problem. But TATA can turn around anything. I had to leave to US for few months so I had cancelled the connection. Once I return mostly I will go for Tata Indicom WiMax. Good luck!
