My husband and I rented this film a while back. I was inspired to write about it, because I read a review comparing this film and Bhoot, which was more silly than scary. Also, I am a fan of the films director, Alejandro Amenobar. He is from Spain. He specialises in these suspenseful horror films. His camera work is superb, and the stories are always amazing. He directed a Spanish film Tesis(Thesis), as well as Vanilla Sky. This film is actually a remake of the Spanish film Obre Los Ojos(Open Your Eyes), which I think is far superior to Tom Cruise playing the role since I think he is one ugly man, and the guy in the original film is HOT.
Casting: This film stars Nicole Kidman as the mother of two children with a rare skin disorder. They cannot be exposed to sunlight, because they blister immediately and could die. This means the curtains must be closed in the house wherever the children are located. They can only be exposed to candlelight. The other cast members are the former house servants that have come back because they feel a connection to the house. Whoever did the casting for the film needs a raise. The chemistry among all the players is so obvious.
The Plot: It is 1945, and Nicole Kidmans character is alone in the house with her 2 children for the time being. Her husband went off to war, and it is believed he is dead. They have only lived in this house a short time. The former servants come back and ask to stay. Nicole is lonely, so she agrees, plus she needs help with the children. They begin to hear noises, and things in the house are getting moved all by themselves. Curtains are being opened, which is dangerous for the children. The little girl starts carrying on conversations with an invisible boy named Victor. The servants are also a bit strange and do not seem surprised by the happenings. This only adds to Nicoles suspicions. However, this is a haunted house with a twist.
Conclusion: I am not going to tell any more about the film, but I must say you have to pay attention to small details in the film or else you will not get the ending. This is what I like about Alejandros films. You must be alert while watching, and be able to pay attention to small details. I think this film is one of the best for Nicole Kidman. I have really come to respect her as an actress. I did not like her in Eyes Wide Shut or Moulin Rouge. She seemed to be typecast. I think this film and her breakup with Tom Cruise were the best things to happen to her professionally. She has blossomed into a wonderful actress. Go see this film, and Alejandros other masterpieces. You will not be disappointed.
