I have been looking at this category and wondering what on earth I could write for advice on shoes but the more I thought about it the more things came to mind.
First of all before shopping for a pair of new shoes consider where you will be wearing these shoes as to what type you buy. If you work in an office and that is where you are going to be wearing them most then of course you would want dress shoes. However if you are going to be using them mostly for hanging around you might want tennis shoes.
After deciding this go to a regular shoe store. Departments stores are okay but there is not the help there is in the shoe store. Let the sales person measure your foot for a correct fitting both size and width that would be most comfortable for you.
Tell them what type of material you want them made of, where you will be wearing them the most, your color choice and style and they will bring you several pairs to try on.
Make sure you dont just try them on but walk around the store in them for a bit to make sure they are comfortable.
Dont chose a color that can only be worn with one outfit unless you plan to buy a lot of pairs to go with all your clothes. Good basic colors are black, brown, tan or white that can be worn with most anything.
Buy what looks good and feels good on you, not what everyone else is wearing to just go with the crowd.
After making your purchase I suggest you wear them a little at a time around your home before walking any great distance in them. What may be comfortable for a few minutes, might not for hours and shoes need to be broken in. I learned a very hard lesson walking for hours in shoes that werent broke in and my feet sure suffered for it.
Ladies used to buy shoes in a smaller size because they didnt want it known they wore something larger and would really damage their feet. Also heels that are too high if you dont know how to walk on them properly get damaged easily. Best to be comfortable and save wear and tear on your feet.
Also you might want to allow a little bit of extra room in the shoes if your feet tend to swell or if at times you wear heavier socks.
Be good to your feet.
