My top list

This the list of my all time favourites.

BMW 3-series: BMW’s smallest and most successful model, is wonderful piece of machinery. Sleek, elegant and sexy inside out, it is the last BMW sedan you can still buy which is(yet) untouched by a certain Mr. Bangle. It is still the standard by which other small luxury cars of the world are judged. There is also a wild M version available.

Ford Mondeo: If ever there was a BMW basher, it is the Ford Mondeo. Luxurious, muscular, refined, well built and can outhandle many cars twice its price. A runaway success in Europe(but flopped in the US in its Contour and Mystique forms). The ST 220 version, with its 220 hp V6 engine, was an enthusiasts dream. Undoubtedly, one of the finest cars to come out of the Ford stables.

Ford Mustang : Another of Ford’s great cars, the Mustang is the original pony car. Fast and inexpensive, the Mustang is a master at providing cheap thrills. Hit a bad patch in the 80’s and early 90’s. But in recent years has regained its position with versions like the 390 hp SVT Cobra. The current redesign is inspired from the original fastback from the late 60’s.

Dodge Charger: If the good guys drove the Mustang, the baddies drove the Charger. While the other muscle cars stayed on over the years and became bigger and fatter, the Charger was in production for only 8 years. True to the muscle car tradition it had an enormous V8 engine, and could have power outputs ranging from 355 to 425 bhp.(I want this one badly!)

Maybach 62: From Boston to Bombay, from Berlin to Baghdad, the Maybach is the sign that you have arrived. This is the car in which you expect to see African dictators and Arab oil sheikhs, along with all the other people who are stinking rich.Has a fabulous twin turbo V12 engine. And every luxury feature invented to date. But the best part is, you can buy one right here in India!

Mercedes Benz W124 500 E : One of the best road cars Mercedes has ever built. It was developed in 1991 along with Porsche. When two great German marques come together, the end result is the combination of all the things the two brands are known for.Unfortunately, they also seem to have added together their prices with their virtues, so it cost 1.1 lakh euros when new. Was in production for 4 years.

Chevrolet Corvette: It was said that if ever a young man’s libido was given a physical form, it would take the shape of the Corvette. The Corvette was(and still is) a sports car with muscle car engine.Sharp and powerful it is the only sports car the Americans won’t feel ashamed of driving in Europe.

Cadillac Escalade: Before the Escalade, the only people who bought Cadillacs were old Americans who had made up their minds of what a luxury car should be decades ago and still stuck to it.Big, loud and garish, the Escalade was an instant hit among a wide range of folks, from cEOs to ganglords and of course, African American musicians.

Nissan Skyline GTR: The only rice rocket to make it to my list, it is a video game equivalent of a car. Quintessentially Japanese, it had a small twin turbo engine mated to a fantastic transmission. The chassis was fabulous, known to handle about 850bhp without breaking into a sweat.

Mercedes 300 SL: One if the most desirable Mercedes ever built, it was named the Best sports car of the last century. It was a radical design when it debuted in the 1950s and had superb gullwing doors. It is simply beautiful. It had a 3.0 litre straight six engine which produced a fabulous(for the time) 215hp.It is one of most admired cars of all time.

Maruti M800: Surprising how this little car manages to wriggle itself into so many best car lists. It is one of the cheapest car in the world today and also the cheapest airconditioned car on sale in the world today. Enormously successful in India because of its key features, low price tag, cheap to run, cheap to maintain, and quite reliable.

Of all the cars I have written above, I have driven only tha M800:(. Other’s I have read about and formed my opinions accordingly.
