Before starting This review I must clear something that basically I am a very happy soul. Recently I came across a question in one of those Psychoanalytical questionnaire passed in forwarded mails. The question was what do you see on your dining table in your dream house? I saw turkey, champagne and lots of fruits(ironically I am a vegetarian and a non boozer). No need to tell what it indicates.
So why a happy soul is writing about tragic songs? Like joy, jealousy and love, pain is one among the prime emotions of human being. An emotion which each and everyone of us can relate to. Those who can?t, must start doubting about their existence as human being. As usual before I start with my list of tragic songs I must ask Kahlil Gibran to intervene and say something.
- pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding.
Much of your pain is self-chosen.
It is the bitter potion by which the physician within you heals your sick self.
Therefore trust the physician, and drink his remedy in silence and tranquility.
For his hand, though heavy and hard, is guided by the tender hand of the Unseen
~Kahlil Gibran~

The List
Most macabre of them
-
*1. Na le ke jaao mere dost ka janaaza hai
Movie: Fiza*
Penned by Guljar Sahab and composed by Anu Malik its one of the most macabre song I have ever heard. Jaspinder Narula?s voice lived this song. There is nothing as bad as losing a friend, someone who was very much of you yourself and the way this song portrayed these feelings send a depressing chill through my spine.
*2. Vakt ne kiya kya haseen sitam
tum rahe na tum, hum rahe na hum
Movie: Kagaz Ke Phool*
It oozes pain and it talks of something lost which can never be recovered. It talks of time which has passed and things which can?t be undone.
* 3. Lag ja gale se fir ye haseen raat ho na ho
shayad fir is janm mein mulakaat ho na ho
Movie: Vo Kaun Thi*
Composed by late Madan Mohan a song which I often noticed in almost everybody?s list. Undeniably it makes your heart brood. One of Lata jee?s greatest songs.
* 4. Lambi judaai
Movie: Hero*
Pakistani singer Reshma who is known for this song mostly couldn?t have done better with it. It is as depressing as it was supposed to be . The longing of the estranged lover couldn?t be sung in a better way.
*5. Dekh lo aaj humko jee bhar ke
Koi aata nahin hai marke
Movie: Bazaar*
A song from one of my favourite movie Bazaar. Fir rooth jayen hum mana lo tum, fir hum jane lagen bula lo tum. Those last minute words when life seems to be ceased and everything is about to become meaning less.
Gone are the days
-
*6. Jane kahan gaye vo din
Movie: Mera Naam Joker*
I need not to say much about this one. Gone are the days but memories are still afire and their warmth doesn?t seems to diminish.
*7. Main ye soch ke uske dar se utha tha
ke vo rok legi mana legi mujhko
Movie: Haqeekat*
Another one of my alltime favourite. Kaifi Aajmi has proved the brilliance of his poetic prowess in this one. Looking back without looking back, perhaps somebody will call you back but?.Main aahista aahista badhta hi aaya, yahan tak ki us se judaa ho gaya main
* 8. Hoke majboor mujhe usne bhulaya hoga
jahar chupke se dava jaan ke khaya hoga
Movie: haqeekat*
One again Kaifi Aajmi at his best. A beautiful song and the simple way of presenting the pain has added more beauty to it.* Mej se jab meri tasveer hatayi hogi, ek ek harf jabeen par ubhar aaya hoga
* 9. Bekadron se karke pyaar
kadar gavaain dil ki yaar
Movie: Nachnevale ganevale*
Never heard of the movie? Neither did i. But the song sung by Sukhvinder Singh is definitely a gem. It simply broods and that?s what a tragic song is supposed to do.
*10.Ankhiyon ko rehne de ankhiyon ke aaspaas
Door se dil ki bujhti rahe pyaas
Movie: Bobby*
dard judaai mein kam nahin milte, sabko muhabbat mein gham nahin milte
tootne vale dil, hote hain kuch khaas, door se dil ki bujhti rahe pyaas
Do you call it celebrating your pain and loss? I do call it same.
Silent cries
-
*11. Karamva bairi ho gaye hamaar
Movie: Teesri Kasam*
You can?t fight destiny and even if you do unexpected always happens. Remember a sad looking Raaj kapoor riding a bullock cart with seemingly lost Vaheeda rehmaan in this song?
*12. Chitthi na koi sandesh, jane vo kaun sa desh
jahan tum chale gaye
Movie: Dushman*
Ironically a lot many of good songs in this genre are from modern Hindi cinema which usually doesn?t happen to my lists. Those of you who have listened to this one can tell me, haven?t you listened it repeatedly at a time and still couldn?t get enough of it?
*13. Maai ree main kaa se kahun peer apne jiya ki
Movie: Dastak*
Pain shared is half relieved but what if you have nobody to share it with? Nobody to comfort, no shoulder to cry. Listen to this one composed by Madan Mohan and you will know what I mean.
*14. Rehte the kabhi jinke dil mein, hum jaan se bhi pyaron ki tarah
baithe hain unhi ke kooche mein, hum aaj gunaahgaron ki tarah
Movie:Mamta*
Penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri its a pain soaked Ghazal. Cry of a heart, let down by those who once loved you more then world, the Ghazal is simple amazing .
*15. Yun hasraton ke daag muhabbat mein dho liye
khud dil se dil ki baat kahi aur ro diye
Movie:Adalat*
Composed By Late Madan Mohan in 1958 its a beautiful piece sung by Lata jee.
Somehow I felt that Madan Mohan rules in this list of mine.
