Sahir :the magician of words

Jo taar se nikli hai vo dhun sabne suni hai

jo saaj pe gujri hai vo kis ko pata hai

March 8, 1921 a baby boy was born in a feudal family in Ludhiyana and named as Abdul Haye. The boy who was destined to be one of the best lyricist in the history of Indian cinema was abandoned by his father in his childhood . Thus started the story of pain, rejection and heart break which accompanied this magician of words till his last breath.

Sahir: As the name suggest was the magician of the words . The genius has given a new height to the art of song writing in Indian cinema. He was the last of his tribe and nobody could take his place ever.

Sahir was a versatile lyricist . In my review I would try to capture the various amplitudes of his poetic prowess.

Sahir and love:

Sahir was in and out of romantic relation ships during his life but unfortunately could never settle down . The lover at heart as he was, he wrote some of the best romantic songs ever. Check this one from pyasa?

*Hum aapki aankhon mein is dil ko basa den to?

Hum moond ke palko ko, is dil ko sajaa den to?

Movie: pyaasa

Music: S D Burman*

*Fir na keeje meri gustakh nigaahi ka gila

dekhiye aapne fir pyaar se dekha hai mujhe

Movie: Phir Subah Hogi

Music: Khayyam*

Is kadar pyaarse dekho na hamari jaani

dil agar aur machal jaye to mushkil hogi

a beautiful duet sung by mukesh and Asha picturised on mala sinha and raj kapoor.

*Abhi na jao chhod kar, ke dil abhi bhara nahin

yahi kahoge tum sada, ke dil abhi bhara nahin

Movie: Hum Dono

Music: Jaidev*

Every lover?s eternal plight that time flies like anything when they are together. In no time its time of seperation. Only Sahir could put that feeling so beautifully in words.

*Simti hui ye ghadiyan, fir se na bikhar jaye

Is raat mein jee len hum, is raat mein mar jayen

Bicchudi hui roohon ka ye mel suhana hai

Is mel ka kucch ehsaas, jimson pe bhi kar jaye

Movie: chambal ki kasam*

I am sure this song will secure its place in many of my lists. Why shouldn?t it be, its sublime sensuality could be handled by the genius lyricist only.

*Maine shayad tumhe pehle bhi kahin dekha hai

Movie: Barsat ki Raat

Music: Roshan*

Remember these famous flirtatious lines? Now see how beautifully the poet put them into words Ajanbi si ho magar gair nahin lagti ho, vaham se bhi ho jo naajuk vo yakeen lagti ho

Sahir and women

Its worth noticing that in the mail dominant society of 50?s a man could right so boldly about socially rejected women. Those who have read his najm Chaklay could comment on the gravity of his words. All I can say is they are powerful.

*Aurat ne janm diya mardo ko,

mardo ne use bajaar bana diya

Movie: Sadhna

Music: N Dutta*

Sansaar ki har ek besharmi, gurbat ki god mein palti hai

chaklon mein hi ja ke rukti hai, faakon mein jo raah nikalti hai

mardon ki havas hai jo aksar, aurat ke paap mein dhalti hai

Sharp, frank and right on target. No thoughs and yets for sahir, he said what he wanted to say.

*Kahiye jee kya khareedenge

yahan to har cheej bikti hai

Movie: sadhna*

Another piece from the same movie as above, sung by lata filmed on vyjyanti mala.

Sahir the philosopher

A man of very refined thinking, he included philosophy in his lyrics in such an easy manner that only a second look will confirm its philosophical.

*Na to caravan ki talaash hai,

na to hamsafar ki talaash hai

Movie: Barsaat Ki ek Raat

Music: Roshan*

Sung by Asha, Sudha Malhotra, Manna De and M. Rafi it is the best qawwali in Indian cinema(in my opinion). Check out following lines from the same.

allaah rasuul kaa faramaan ishq hai

yaane hafiiz ishq hai, quraan ishq hai

gautam kaa aur masiih kaa aramaan ishq hai

ye kaayanaat jism hai aur jaan ishq hai

*Sansar se bhage firte ho,

bhagvan to kya tum paoge

Movie: Chandralekha

Music: Roshan*

Another philosophical piece from the movie chitralekha . Check Man retu kahe na dheer dhare from the same movie.

Sahir the patriot

*ye desh hai veer javano ka, albelo ka mastano ka

is desh ka yaron kya kehna

Movie: Naya daur

Music: O P Nayyar*

I have no words to describe the spontaneity and vivacity of this song . You tell me.

*Jinhe naaj hai hind par vo kahan hai

Movie: Pyaasa

Music: S D Burman*

This song has been taken from his famous work Chaklay . The opening lines were changed from the original.

Sahir and heartbreak

He has failed repeatedly in love . His affair with Amrita pritam and Sudha Malhotra is a well known story. That?s why most of the good lyrics by him are the tragic songs.

*Chalo ek baar fir se ajnabee ban jaye hum dono

Movie: Gumraah

Music: Ravi*

Taahruf bojh ho jaye to uske chhodna accha

vo afsana jise anjaam tak lana na ho mumkin

use ek khoobsurat mod de kar chhodna accha

A song which speaks about a rotten relationship. Not many people can put this complex feeling into words in such refined way.

*Muhabbat turk ki maine, gareeban see liya maine

Movie: Doraha

Music: Ravi*

Abhi jinda hun lekin sochta rehta hun ye aksar,

abhi tak kis tamanna ke sahare jee liya maine

Probably his very first lyrics for a movie .They say he was one lyricist who never wrote to any tune. He wrote and musicians gave tune to his words.

*Ashkon ne jo paya hai vo geeto ne diya hai

Movie: Sone ki chidiya*

The story of sahir?s life. The pain and humiliation was quite visible in his https://lyrics. Only a man so deep in pain could write these words.

*Kya miliye aise logo se jinki fitrat chipi rahe

nakli chehra saamne aye, asli surat chhipi rahe

Movie: Izzat

Music: Laxmi-Pyare*

A simple man as he was he couldn?t help himself criticizing the prevalent hypocrisy in society.

Khud se hi jo khud ko chhipaye kya unki tareef kare

*duniya kare saval to hum, kya javab den

tumko na ho khyaal to hum, kya javab den

Movie: Bahu Begum*

I still marvel the way he could convey the most complex of human emotions. This one from bahu begum is a perfect example.
