Yoga for beginners

I had been on the prowl for a yoga book to complement my class. The glossy close up color photos decided this book for me. My class was great but the teacher was always in a bit of a hurry. And the rest of the students were much ahead of me.So I needed a book to practise more at home.

Most of the yoga books have few photos and that too in black and white. And none of the books had photos of the postures leading up to the final asana.

So when I ran across. Yoga-The body mind &the divine by Govindji I was ecstatic.

This is a great book but  it is not a replacement for a trained yoga teacher. This book compliments the class and helps you perfect your posture at home.

This book is divided into different sections such as warming up exercises, postures for the elderly, meditation postures, sitting postures, standing postures and relaxation postures. There is the obligatory introduction about the history and principles and the benefits

of yoga.

For each complex asana there are photos for each position leading up to the final asana.Another great thing about the book is the section on warming up postures with the corresponding photos. The section on Suryanamaskara is also pretty interesting. This book contains all the important asanas. But it is in no

way complete.Important asanas like Chakrasana and Yoga mudra are left out.I found portions of the book in different websites.I don’t know if the copying was done from the book to the websites or vice versa. There is nothing about Pranayama in the book. And Pranayama is as important as the asanas.

All in all it is a great book  for beginners and intermediate practitioners.
