Supreme Court's verdict on 10th July, 2013 declaring section 8(4) of People's Representation Act as ultra vires is a big step in the right direction towards de-criminalisation of politics. No right thinking person wants to enter politics as it has become " last refuge of scoundrels". The list of MPs and MLAs reads something like a "who's who of criminal world".
The judgement of Supreme Court cancels the membership of all such MPs and MLAs who have been sentenced to an imprisonment of 2 yrs. or more if no appeal is pending. If any such judgement is passed against sitting parliamentarians and legislators in future they would lose their membership with immediate effect even if any appeal gets filed.
Let's only hope that the political parties respect the verdict in letter and spirit and don't get together to amend the law to make this judgement infructuous. This act of politicians will be in total disregard of people's sentiments.
The suspicion arises from past experience. All parties have combined to oppose the ruling of Central Information Commissioner to bring political parties in the ambit of RTI Act. Why are they making such a hue and cry only for being asked to be transparent as envisaged under RTI Act?People of the country have a right to know the sources from which huge money flows to political parties. The nexus between businessmen, criminals, bureaucrats and politicians is all too obvious.
Let's all unite to cleanse the politics of the filth which makes it so stinking at present.
