One thing that distinctly distinguishes India from other developed countries is " maintenance". Despite spending trillions of rupees on roads, dams, hospitals, parks , lighting systems etc. etc., why is that most of the infrastructure and equipments remain dysfunctional? How many times have we seen lift at railway station not working putting disabled and old people to a lot of hardship, accidents taking place on roads as streetlights were not functioning and there were a number of pits on the road , the nullahs don't get cleaned before rains creating flood like situation every year? For want of a few hundreds of rupees, machines worth lacs and crores of rupees remain out of order in the hospital. Same is the story of public toilets. Most of these toilets are used from outside than from inside as you ca't even enter it due to filth and stink.
As per the present, private persons construct buildings for hospitals and schools and hand over to govt. for maintaining and running them. Best of the buildings get dilapidated due to non- mainenance soon. Why can't the governments reverse the policy? Since it has all the land, it can construct such institutions and handover to private entrepreneurs or corporates for running and maintenance. One has to accept that govt. is the worst agency to maintain anything whereas private sector due to inbuilt flexibility in functioning can do it very well. If this could happen, a lot of money will be properly utilised and public would also be to take advantage of the facilities created. Hope, someone reads it and starts acting.
