Long time before the release of “Kyun Ho Gaya Na” was released; Samir Karnik was studying International Relations in Washington, DC. At that time his aim was to solve international disputes by becoming a troubleshooter at the United Nations. On completion of studies hi mind changed and he wanted to become a showbiz rather than a diplomat. In order to follow his dreams, he went to Mumbai in 1996 and joined Vidhu Vinod Chopra as an assistant director on Kareeb. At this point Samir realized that whatever he had learnt about International Relations was a waste due to his delay in recognizing his passion.
His first break as an assistant director was enough for him to gain him some recognition in the field. And as a result Samir got an offer to run a television station in Tanzania. He did a lot of thing to meet his basic aim of becoming a director. Four years later he realized that he should make a movie and for that he left his studies too. In 2002, he returned to Mumbai to with script in his hands and determination in mind to make a movie. But he needed a producer and a good cast for the movie to start the shoot for the movie. And as it is a known that his first movie comprised of big stars which is also an important factor in gaining popularity for the movie.
Vivek Oberoi has been Samir’s school friend from Mayo College, Ajmer and consequently they met on the sets of the movie “Saathiya” where Samir had gone to meet some of his friend. He told him that his first film “Company” had released. Upon reading the script of Samir’s directorial debut movie “Kyun! Ho Gaya Na...”, Vivek showed interest and was ready to do the lead role. And as in case of Vivek, Amitabh Bachchan and Aishwarya also liked the script.
The release of the first movie initiated Samir Karnik’s career as a Director and he came up with movies like “Heroes” and “Yamla Pagla Deewana” in which he was the producer as well.
After his rip-roaring Yamla Pagla Deewana, Samir Karnik is ready with his next directorial venture, Chaar Din Ki Chandni. The film, starring Tusshar Kapoor and Kulraj Randhawa, is set to release on Lohri next year. The film revolves around a Rajput family and Punjabi family, who are caught in a situation which creates comedy of errors. The movie also stars Anupam Kher, Om Puri, Johnny Lever, Mukul Dev, Anita Raj, Sushant Singh and Chandrachur Singh. Further, the title track of the 1989 release “Chandni” is another high point of the film, says Samir. “The idea of the song “O meri Chandni” came from the fact that the girl’s name in the movie is chandni”? It brings a sense of recall and fits the situation,” says the producer-director.
