Dhanush is an Indian actor, producer, lyricist and playback singer who works in Tamil cinema. He is the son of Kasthuri Raja who is a director, a producer and a writer.  His real name is Ventakesh Prabhu. He is the son-in-law of Rajinikanth as he is married to Aishwarya, who is Rajnikanth’s daughter. 

His first role as a mentally disturbed man in Kaadhai Kondein won him critical acclaim. His film Pudhupettai was also critically acclaimed. His film Thiruda Thiruda was also a commercial success. His films Yaaradi Nee Mohini and Padikkadavan were box-office success. He won a National Film Award for Best Actor and the best Tamil actor award for his role as a rooster fight jockey in Aadukalam. Dhanush made his Bollywood debut in Raanjhanaa. His role as an obsessive one-sided lover won him critical acclaim and also the best male debut award.He played a triple role in a romantic thriller, Anegan which was a moderate success. He followed that with Maari and Thanga Magan, which were moderately successful at the box office. He also stared in Thodari, which was a commercial failure although it got a lot of critical acclaim. He played dual roles in the political thriller, Kodi. He also won the best actor award for his film Maryan. He produced and starred in cinematographer Velraj’s directorial debut, Velailla Pattadhari. He also co-starred with Amitabh Bachchan in R.Balki’s Shamitabh.  The romantic thriller, Anegan, in which he starred was a moderate success. That was followed by Maari and Thanga Magan. 

His films Pudhukottaiyillirundhu Saravanan, Sultan and Dreams did not do well at the box office. 

He made his directorial debut with the film Pa Pandi. 

He received international attention for his film, Why This Kolaveri Di, which became the most viewed Indian song on Youtube.
