He is an actor, producer, director, screenwriter, writer, philanthropist and politician. He is the younger brother of Chiranjeevi and Nagendra Babu. He was born to Konidela Venkat Rao and Anjana Devi. He loves reading books and planting saplings.  

He works predominantly in Telugu cinema. He is also an accomplished choreographer. He is foundly called as Kalyan Babu and Power star by his fans. He was married to Renu Desai, who acted with him in two movies and they have two children.  He has been married thrice, first to Nandini and then Renu Desai and then Anna Lezhneva and he has two children with Anna Lezhneva as well. 

He starred in the movie Tholi Prema for which he won the National Film Award for best feature film in Telugu for that year. 

He is known for his work in the films like Gokulamlo Seetha, Suswagatam, Thammudu, Badri, Kushi, Jalsa and Gabbar Singh. He received the filmfare award for the best actor in Telugu for his movie Gabbar Singh. 

He produces films under Anjana Poductions and Pawan Kalyan Creative works. He entered politics in the year 2014 and he founded the Jana Sena Party. 

He was the first South Indian actor to endorse the popular soft-drink giant, Pepsi, making him the first South Indian to endorse the popular soft-drink. He is also the brand ambassador of the hand loom weavers in Andhra Pradesh and Telengana. He was asked to be the brand ambassador of JEEVAN DAAN and initiative started for organ donation by the government of Andhra Pradesh. 

He has written sardaar gabbar singh. He wrote the screenplay for Gudumba Shankar and he also wrote the screenplay for Johnny and gave the story for this movie. 

He is the producer for Chal Mohan Ranga and Sardaar Gabbar Singh. He directed the movie Johnny and he sang in Agnyaathavaasai and Atharintiki Daaredi and Panjaa.
