OVERVIEW
Daman and Diu is second smallest Union Territory in India, and is based in Gujarat. Daman lies in Gujarat while Diu is an islet in the southern region of Kathiawar peninsula. It is surrounded by Bhagwan and the Kalem rivers in the North and South, respectively. On the other hand Gujarat lies to its East and Arabian Sea to the West of it.
Daman and Diu, earlier, were part of Goa. It was only in 1987, when Goa became a separate state, that this region became a union territory. For about 450 years, these enclaves on the western coast were part of Portugese India, which is evident from the architectural manifests around the region. These foreign invaders seized Daman in 1559, after the death of last Gujarati king. Whereas the attempts for Diu began in 1531 and Portugese became successful only in 1535, by taking advantage of internal fights and squabbles between the king and the Mughal Emperor, Humayun.
Daman and Diu, together fester up to 535 small-scale industries, which makes for major economic earning. Apart from this tourism is flourishing in these parts, courtesy to stretching beaches and scenic locations. In Daman, St. Jerome in Nani Daman, St. Cathedral and Church of Our Lady of Rosary in Moti Daman are worth a visit. These monuments are different due totheir Gothic architecture.
Zampa Getaway, in Diu, has beautiful and detailed carvings of lions, angles and a priest, and has a small chapel located in the interiors that bears inscription dating back to 1702.
Gujarati is the official language and the population is mainly comprised of Hindu, Jains, Muslims and Christians.
Culture in this territory is majorly influenced by the Portuguese culture. There is only an influence of the Gujrati culture here.
