3 devotees (1 disabled on wheelchair) had a horrible experience at the hands of a temple staff, who illtreated and abused a senior citizen and disallowed a disabled person entry closer to the main entry. We were waiting patiently for a staff to let us in; the staff however shouted out the senior citizen and was close to pushing down the senior citizen. The staff should not be allowed to work there, his behaviour was unlike a staff. On top of this, the police divert private vehicles to go round and round around the temple for unknown reasons, with the exception of auto rickshaws. Hmmm. Temple may be sacred but the temple staff are no good. So, disappointment is an understatement.

Came here for Arunachala Shiva darshan. Struggled a lot during my stay. Getting to hotel in a car became massive issue. It took 2+ hours trying to get to location as police has blocked roads in many places and there were no signs or help assist the tourists. We pretty much circled in 1 - 2 km radius for 2 hours. After reaching the hotel, folks there said there are no rooms and our reservation got cancelled without proper reason. We quickly realized he was trying to make money by cancelling reservations and renting them for higher price. Inside the temple, no proper information booths or help desks. And almost no one speaks any language other than Tamil. Only reliable commute inside city is autos as they seem to have some business understanding between traffic police and auto folks. Personal vehicles are pretty much useless inside the city. Only autos are allowed everywhere and they know the routes, but they basically rip off the tourists. Getting out of city as crazy as entering… they closed the road to high way without proper directions or sign boards. This is one place police could have used barricades but they didn’t .. commute options are also seems to be less.

Tiruvannamalai this temple town is 188 kms from chennai and the seat of the shrine of lord Arunachaleswar. We planned to visit the place as one of our close friend organised a tour to tiruvannamalai. Upto chennai we took train from Bangalore. By morning 5 clock we reached there. Our friend was waiting with his car. We had a sumptuous breakfast and started for tiruvannamalai. By 3 hours we reached our place.

First we travelled around the town. After evening we started for temple darshan.  A deepam is lit on the sacred hill by the side of the temple on the karthigai day in the month of November. Surprisingly the deepam sheds its light for several kilometres around the town.

Devotees throng the town to have a darshan of the deepam. The magnificent gopuram of the temple is 61 metres high with 11 storeys. Tiruvannamalai is also widely known for the ashram of Sri Ramana Maharishi the sage of Arunachala who livef and taught the virtues of wisdom.

Our journey to tiruvannamalai was a great experience. We spend some awesome 2 days there. We stayed in Chennai but in tiruvannamalai there are many options for hotels.  It is connected by air nearest airport is Chennai. By road and rail tiruvannamalai having many options.

The old meditation hall in Ramanashramam, where the Maharshi used to spend most of His time, is a prime attraction apart from the main temple and the Adi Annamalai temple.

The major road to the town, NH66 from Krishnagiri, is being relaid. Expect some bad stretches till the work is completed. Those travelling from Bangalore can consider the route Bargur - Tirupattur - Singarapettai - Chengam - Tiruvannamalai, thus avoiding part of the NH66. This route takes only 15km extra.

There are hotels suiting all budgets in the town, from 300 INR per day to over 5000 INR per day.

On a regular day it will take approximately an hour to worship at all the sannidhis in the temple. On special days like Pradosham or on festival days the number of people will be larger. On full moon days and Shivarathri day there will be thousands of people.

Ramanashramam is about 2km from the Raja gopuram, autos typically charge 40 INR. Adi Annamalai temple is a very old temple, almost exactly diagonally opposite to the main temple, on the other side of the holy hill. Much of the time there are not many people in the temple, and one can spend as much time as one pleases in front of  the sannidhis. In contrast, in the main temple, one gets only a few seconds in front of the sannidhis.

Avoid Girivalam between 0830 to 1700, it can be very hot. Girivalam can be done any day. During full moon days thousands of people do Girivalam throughout the day, it can be crowded.

The Vedas chanting and devotees rendition of Akshara Mana Malai in Ramanashramam are a treat to listen. There are also quite a few temples in the surrounding towns like Tirukkoilur, Tiruvarangam, Nedungunam, Parvathamalai, Devikapuram, Injimedu. The two Perumal temples in Tirukkiolur and Tiruvarangam, both nearly 35 km from Tiruvannamalai, are ancient and as the priests in the temples say, one needs to have the "praptham" to visit the temples.

The weather can be hot during March to October. One can make plans about visiting Tiruvannamalai, but will be able to go there and see the temples and ashrams only when God Himself allows. Needless to say, there is such an amount of peace, and one has to tear oneself away from the place.

Tiruvannamalai

I always make it a point to visit Ramana Maharshi Ashram at Tiruvannamalai whenever I am in Pondicherry. This time too(December 26, 2007), I was keen to spend two days there.  There are regular bus services to Tiruvannamalai from Pondicherry via Villipuram. It takes about 3 hours 15 minutes to reach there.  From the bus stand you can hire an auto and if you do not have any luggage you can take a walk in the morning and by half an hour you will reach the Ashram.

I first read a book by Paul Brunton, ‘In search of Secret India’.  What impressed me about the book is the sincerity with which it was written.  Of course, the language is superb. I have rarely come across such beautiful writings. I would recommend my friends to read this book.  It is really wonderful.   In later years I studied almost all the books by devotees and by Ramana Maharshi.  His life was so simple and the great austerity that he had undergone, is easily comparable with The Enlightened one – The Buddha. My admiration for Ramana Maharashi stems from his life and teachings – life so unique, teachings so close to ones heart that you feel being one with him. How I wish I could meet him in person, had he been alive. But nonetheless, the whole atmosphere at the Ashram and the Arunachal hill is saturated with his presence.

I reached the Ashram by 9.30 in the morning.  Although I had no reservation. I was  gracefully allotted a single bed room across the road.  The meditation hall where Ramana Maharshi used to sit on a sofa and give Darshan to the devotees, has a big picture of the Maharshi placed. This is one of the most important wings of the Ashram.  As you sit quietly in this room,  you feel the presence of Maharshi as if he were present there. During his life time when someone asked him what would happen when he would not be present in physical form. Maharshi replied, “ Where could I go, I will be here only.”  This candid reply emboldens devotee to think of him being present in the Ashram. This Ashram continues with traditional mode of worship and dining facilities.  Visitors are to sit on the floor and eat with hands without use of spoons.  For breakfast at 7 a.m., lunch at 11.30 a.m., Tea/Coffee at 4 p.m. and dinner at 7.30 p.m. you have to be in the queue to gain entry into the dinning hall.

There are two important places on Arunachal hill where Maharshi did his tapas during the period 1899 to 1916 and 1916 to 1922. The first one is called Virupaksha Cave and the second one is Skandashramam. It takes about 40 minutes walk up the hill to reach these two places.  These places are perfect for a session of Meditation or you can sit quietly looking at the vegetation on the hill or look at the town of Tiruvannumalai below.  I went up the hill and visited the Skandashramam and went up further.  As it was getting dark I had to come down, but I wish to complete this journey next time when I visit Ramana Maharshi Ashram.

Next day I planned to complete the circumambulation of the hill which I was told about 14 kilometers. So next morning after finishing my breakfast at the dinning hall, I took the path laid out for Giripradakshina. As you come out from the Ashram you take a right turn along the main road. After about 25 minutes of walk you find the road gets divided, one goes straight that is called Chengam Road and on the right is the Pradakshina route. I came across many water bodies, temples and Ashram on the way. It took about 3 hours time to complete the circumambulation.  I once again had a bath and went for lunch at 11.30 a.m. I took every opportunity to sit in the meditation hall because that is the main hall where Ramana Maharshi’s presence is felt.  The Nirvana Room displays some of the articles used by Maharshi.

There are many books available on Ramana and by Ramana.  One of the most important one is, I suppose, “Talks with Ramana Maharshi”  and the other one is Self Realization by B.V. Narasimha Swami. His principle teaching is to find out, “Who am I” This enquiry into self is all that one needs to realize the Self. Ramana Maharshi lived about 70 years of earthly life. He was in the world but not of the world.

I submitted the key of the room and gave a token donation for my stay at the office.  With a heavy heart I had to take leave of this beautiful place around 2.30 p.m. with a desire to come many more times in future.

I used to ask myself, why there are many foreigner visit this small town in Tamilnadu, a statistical report says next to Mahabalipuram in Chennai this place attracts visitors from ourside India.Tiruvannamalai is been considered as a religious place for Hindus, though the major attraction for foreigner is Yoga

in the town. For the domestic people Arunachaleswarar temple in this town is one of the important place they every wanted to visit in their life. This place is also called Southern Kailash.

The legend beyond this temple is that, once upon a time when Vishnu and Brahman had issue

concluding who is powerful among them, the issue has been taken to Lord Siva for his justice. He said I will grow touching the sky on my head and going underground on my foot you both have to choose take each destination (feet and head), whoever reaches their destination first is the powerful person. Brahma

accepted the offer and said he will go towards the head as he can fly easily with Swan avatar, Vishnu accepted to touch the foot as he has already had varagam(Pig) avatar so it is easy for him to dig the ground.

The competition started between them and both were traveling towards their destinations for long time, years rolled and they could never reach the destination. While Brahma flying towards the head,

chancing upon a piece of "Thazhambu", a flower learnt from it that it had been floating down for thirty thousand years from Lord Siva’s head. He seized upon this and claimed to Lord Siva that he had seen the other’s top. Lord Siva realized the falsehood and pronounced that there would never be a temple

for Lord Brahma in this world.

He also interdicted the use of the flower Thazhambu in his worship.Lord Siva appeared as a flame an outcome of the angry caused by the lie from Brahma. After the other Gods of Hindus requested him to be clam as it affect the entire galaxy he clam down settling as a hill in this town called Tiruvannamalai which is a form of Thiru – Respectful, Anna – Greatest, Malai – Hill. This hill has been worshiped by people as Lord Siva. Every full moon day about 2Lakhs people are visiting Tiruvannamalai and walking around the 14 kms

of hill rounding path by foot even without a foot wear.

This incident is been celebrated every year

by Hindus all over India

as Karthikai Deepam festival. The festival falls 10 consecutive days in

November and December months of English calendar. The temple in Tiruvannamalai

is one of the World largest Hindu temples covering 24acres of land mostly

covered with granite flooring. The temple as nine numbers of fully completed

Gopuram(entrance towers) with the Main entrance as high has the tallest Hindu

temple in the world. The entire temple has been developed in various time

period by many kings and emperors. The Sannathi (place for worship) is build

before 2000 years from now. The main tower is build by Krishna Devarayar who is

also well known emperors of India

and who build the worlds richest temple

Thirupati. Other

atteractions of the temple are the 1000pillar hall, Golden car, tallest bronze

statue of Lord Natraj and stone made link chains on the pillars inside the

temple. This temple is one of the five temples of Panja bootham (Fire, Water, Ground,

Sky and Air) and Lord Arunachaleswarar represents Fire.

Apart from Arunachaleswarar temple this

town also has a Pavazha Kundru where is believed to be the place Siva and

Sakthi integrated themselves has a single person showing the importance of

Husband and Wife. The Pavasha kundru is about 200 meters from north side

entrance of the Arunachaleswarar temple. There is also a belief that those

husband and wife who has internal problem visiting here will make them

integrated.

This temple is around 200kms distance from

Chennai and connected by National highways. The Bangalore – Pondy NH65 crosses this town and

connecting NH45 in Tindivanam. While traveling from Chennai the tourist can

also visit Gingee the great fort which is just 28kms from Tiruvannamalai. This

place also has several ashrams of Yogis and in the recent days the Greatest

Music Director Illayaraja has been attracted by this temple and permanently

living here as a devotee to Lord Siva.

It is one of the most peaceful places I

have ever seen in my life I hope you people will have a peaceful feeling deep inside

your heart while visiting the temple here.

The Thejo Sthalam (among the panch boothams the Thejo means ‘Fire’, one of the five elements of nature) Tiruvannamalai immediately brings into our memory the most popular ‘GiriValam’.

What is GiriValam:

Girivalam is commonly performed on the Pournami (Full Moon) Days which comes once every month and also on special occasions like Shiv Raathri (on this day which comes once in a year different poojas are done for Lord Shiva throughout the night and the devotees spend their time at temples actively taking part in the Bhajan sessions etc.).

GiriValam is the practice of the devotees of the Lord Shiva going around the Hill (Annamalai Mount) which approximately is about 16 Kms. The devotees go bare foot singing bhajan songs and slogams of Lord Shiva. I have been taking up a GiriValam with my mother for many years (I don’t know when exactly it started) whenever possible.

Tiruvannamalai is the only holy place in Tamil Nadu which is famous for the GiriValam. During the special sacred days aforesaid, at a time, around 3 Lakhs of people would be performing the GiriValam and hundreds of special buses would be operated on all these anticipated GiriValam days. During these days, there would also be many snacks and tiffin centres found around the Temple, which sell good homely Idlis and Dosas at very reasonable low cost.

Famous Temple at Tiruvannamalai (Siva-Paarvathi Temple) :

The most famous temple at Tiruvannamalai is the Arunachaleswarar Temple and the Lord Shiva worshipped at this temple is called “ANNAMALAIYAR”. The Goddess (termed by us as ‘Ambaal’) here is “UNNAMULAI AMMAN”. Like the other temples of South India, in this temple also, you can find Free Queues and Special Tickets Queues for Darshan of the Lord. Generally the Main Lord Shiva’s situate is overcrowded but you could always manage, standing in the queue would certainly never be unpleasant.

Story of Lord Shiva at Tiruvannamalai:

The most popular ancient story briefing the Greatest Power of the Deity at Tiruvannamalai is that, Lord Shiva assumed the Form of a very huge (unimaginable) column of Fire which despite their excessive great powers, Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu failed to trace.

Stay Spots at Tiruvannamalai:

Facilitating decent and economical accommodation to the thousands of devotees, there are lot of very good Hotels (Lodges) at Tiruvannamalai. The following are some of the very neatly maintained such lodges around the main temple :

•     Devi Lodge

•     Sri Aruna Restaurant - Lodge

•     Hotel Akash

•     Modern Cafe

•     Abhirami Lodge

•     Abhirami Hotel

•     Deepam Hotel

•     Sri Deepam Restaurant

•     Muruga Lodge

•     Modern Cafe Annex

There are even lot more hotels / lodges which charge a very nominal rent with a number of attenders aiming at the comfort of the tourists.

Cleanliness at Tiruvannamalai:

Jus’ imagine a cluster of about 2 Lakhs people tightly hitting each other and going around the temple on GiriValam days. Obviously the crowd includes a small child to very aged people. To swab the tiredness of the devotees there are lot of stalls selling drinks and snacks and many other food items on either side of the GiriValam Pathway. So, only during these special days, you could find lot of thrown away plastic covers, empty food packets, paper cups etc. but certainly the roads are not that nasty despite such a crowd. Most of the devotees try to observe cleanliness to the maximum possible extent and so even these trashes are never found on the walking platform / roads.

But once the GiriValam days are over, the Municipality keeps the roads very clean and the roads after these days would be as if no one had visited Tiruvannamalai at all. This is one of the appreciable features of the Metropolis.

Famous Festival at Tiruvannamalai:

During the Tamil month of Kaarthigai, Kaarthigai Deepam Festival is one of the most popular festivals of Tiruvannamalai in which all the women of the city would actively participate. This festival mainly consists of lighting the mud lights in and around the temple by the devotees followed by performing Poojas to the Divinity. It would be really very delightful and fascinating to see the thousands of lights lit by so many people and the entire place even at midnight would be very dazzling and glitter would never leave our eyes.

The annual ritual of Brahmotsavam in the same month of Kaarthigai is yet another famous festival at Tiruvannamalai which features the procession of deities on beautifully and gorgeously decorated Mounts through the temple town.

Jus’ a briefing about the other Prominence of Tiruvannamalai below :

•Like the Sacrosanct City Madurai, there is 1000 pillared hall here also built by Krishnadeva Rayar of Vijayanagar.

•Every Prakaaram of the temple consists of a very huge Nandi.

•There is a beautiful temple of Goddess Kaliamman called Mathura Kaaliamman Temple, which is a must-see for the tourists.

•Ramana Maharshi (Saint) Ashram, Raaghavendra Swamy Shrine, the Seshadri Swamigal’s holy Ashram are some of the prehistoric places and a requirement for the tourists to see when take up the GiriValam Path.

Finale:

In particular, Tiruvannamalai is a Sanctified Temple city in Tamil Nadu being the greatest Saivite Shrines in India. Saivite is one of the class of people, generally the hindu religious people are divided into Saivites and Vaishnavities – For the Saivites Lord Shiva is the main God ad for the Vaishnavites Lord Vishnu is the major God. It takes around 5 hours of travel by road from the Metro city Chennai to Tiruvannamalai and for all those who propose to take up a tour to Chennai, Tiruvannamalai is a Must-See !!!!!
