For me.. It was an engaging/gripping movie to watch... And I felt that Rajeev has done a good job considering that its his first film & camera is focusing on him all the time in most of the 167 mins of the film. You are right when you say that the film is a diamond in a coal.
I agree with your viewpoint. The extravagant sets n grandeur is not justified. Most of the 65cr budget has gone into these sets
